Clean Chocolate Stains from Upholstery

So you and your kids love eating chocolate – especially on the couch. However the sweet chocolate can become a bittersweet experience when it becomes a stain on your precious sofa upholstery. Chocolate stains are very hard to remove because it contains natural dyes from cocoa pods and also artificial dyes, oils from milk, sugar and cream. We have prepared for you some great tips that will help you clean the chocolate stains from your upholstery and keep your home nice and clean.
  1. First of all you need to react quickly before the dyes go deeper into the fabrics of the upholstery. Start with removing the excess bits of the chocolate by using a spoon or a butter knife. Be careful with the fabrics and remove the chocolate gently from the upholstery.

  2. Use cold water to rinse the chocolate stain.
  3. Use gentle liquid detergent to rub into the stain. Wait for at least 5 minutes so that the detergent can be effective on the chocolate stain.
  4. Rinse the area thoroughly using a clean sponge and warm water to remove the detergent and the chocolate remaining.
  5. You may need to repeat the process several times until the spot is completely removed.
  6. At the end apply special stain remover product to remove the oily stain.
  7. Wait for the area to dry completely before using it again. If you still see any traces of the stain when the area is dry, you should consider contacting professional cleaning services to make sure the stain is perfectly cleaned and no oily traces are seen.
Here are some more tips that will save your upholstery from the traces left by the sweet chocolate temptation:
  • If the liquid detergent is not powerful enough to remove the stain, you may mix a few drops detergent and a few drops ammonia to create a more powerful cleaning product.
  • Always test the cleaning product on a small hidden spot of the upholstery to make sure the solution does not damage the fabrics and the colours of the upholstery.
  • If one cleaning solution does not work, always rinse it well before trying another one. The active chemicals in the products can work totally different when mixed and they can damage the fabrics of the upholstery.
Finally do not worry if you cannot remove the stain from chocolate on the upholstery – you can always ask for professional help!
