Some of you may have tried to brew your own beer in your maze or garage. Good for you. You should know how to use your equipment. Here is a little memo on how to keep your equipment clean and working, and your beers – pure and delicious.
The equipment should not only be sanitized but rather be thoroughly cleaned, often, like the cleaners Victoria docks advise.
There are several types of mess that you will have to deal with – organic and non-organic.
The organic stuff is basically proteins, oils and carbonates, that come from the ingredients you may use, like hoops, yeast, etc. The best way to clean them is to use alkaline or caustic cleaners.
The non-organic waste refers to minerals, other things that come from water, which are best cleaned with acid based cleaners.
Most household cleaners don't deal with the non-organic stuff well enough. Cleaners Victoria docks suggest a cleaner called Powder Brewery Wash. It is a mix of both organic and non organic cleaning components. This should help you with most of the waste.
If you don't have it, or you find it expensive, cleaners Victoria Docks suggest a home made solution of 42g of Oxiclean and 10g of TSP 90 in 2 gallons of water. This solution makes cleaning your equipment extremely easy. You may check out the effect by sliding your fingers on glass and plastic parts – your finger should stick to the surface, rather than slide on it.
The TSP component reduces the pH level, so this cleaner is safe for metals as well. Don't leave the solution to dry though, or it will leave a chalky film which can be removed only by acid cleaner.
